This is a buying guide, not a hands-on product review. The best backup drive for your setup is one you will use consistently and can restore from reliably.
Allow room to grow
Measure the files you want to protect, then allow space for new files and older versions. A drive that barely holds today’s files can quickly become too small.
Match the connection
Check the computer’s ports, the supplied cable, and operating-system compatibility. A connector’s shape alone does not tell you its supported transfer speed.
Compare portability and cost
Portable solid-state drives can be convenient for travel. Hard drives can offer more capacity for the money. Neither choice removes the need for a second backup.
Protect access
If you use encryption, understand how recovery works and keep the key safe. Check the manufacturer’s warranty and support terms, but remember that replacing a faulty drive does not restore lost files.
Test your setup
After buying, run a backup and restore a small file to a separate folder. Disconnect an offline backup drive safely when finished, and keep another copy away from the main device.
