A phone that stays at 80% needs a different check from one that shows no sign of charging. Start by noting the battery percentage, any message on the screen, and whether you are using a cable or wireless charger. Change one thing at a time so the result tells you something useful.
1. Separate a pause from a failed connection
Apple explains that Optimized Battery Charging can delay charging beyond 80%. Heat can also pause charging, and iPhone 15 models and later may have a configured charge limit. Check the Battery section of Settings and any charging message before assuming the battery is faulty. Move a warm phone and charger to a cooler location.
2. Simplify the charging setup
Try a wall outlet with a compatible cable and adapter connected firmly. Check for visible damage and stop using damaged accessories. If possible, test a different cable, adapter or outlet individually. Restart the iPhone if it responds.
For example, if the same phone and cable charge using a second adapter, the original adapter or its power connection deserves attention. Replacing several parts at once might get charging working, but it will not tell you which part caused the problem.
3. Give an empty battery time
Apple recommends allowing 30 minutes to charge. If it still will not start, follow Apple’s model-specific force-restart instructions, then allow another 30 minutes. The button sequence varies by model; use the linked instructions below.
4. Treat physical problems separately
Look at the port in good light. If the plug will not seat normally, avoid forcing it or probing with metal tools. Ask a qualified repair provider about a blocked or damaged connector. A phone that only charges while you hold the cable at an angle needs attention rather than a makeshift overnight setup.
Write down any liquid-detection or accessory warning exactly as shown. That detail is more useful to support staff than “charging is broken.”
5. Know when to get help
If charging still fails, arrange service. Bring your test notes: phone model, charging method, messages, and which accessories worked or failed. If the phone is usable, make sure important information is backed up before a repair appointment.
