Deleted an iPhone photo by mistake? Open Photos and check Recently Deleted first. Apple normally keeps deleted photos and videos there for 30 days, giving you a chance to recover them without restoring the whole phone.
For now, do not empty Recently Deleted, reset the iPhone or install a recovery app promising guaranteed results. Start with the built-in recovery option below. This guide follows Apple’s documentation; it does not claim that we tested your phone or can guarantee recovery.
1. Look in Recently Deleted
Open Photos and find Utilities → Recently Deleted. Depending on your Photos layout, you may need to open Collections or swipe up to see Utilities. Tap View Album and unlock it when asked.
Look for the picture or video you need. If you see it, open it and choose Recover, then confirm. For several items, use Select, choose the intended pictures, and use the More menu’s Recover option. Take care to choose Recover rather than Delete.
Apple describes these steps in its deleted-photo recovery guide. The 30-day window starts when an item is deleted; finding the album today does not start a fresh countdown.
What you should see: the recovered item leaves Recently Deleted and returns to your photo library. Look around its original date or search for it rather than assuming it will be the newest picture.
2. Confirm the right picture came back
Open the recovered photo and check that it is the one you wanted. For a video, play a short section and confirm it is the intended recording. Do this before deleting similar-looking copies or continuing a large storage cleanup.
If you recovered only one of several missing pictures, return to Recently Deleted and inspect the rest individually. A successful recovery of one photo does not establish that every missing item was deleted in the same way.
If you were clearing space, pause that cleanup until the important pictures are accounted for. Our iPhone storage guide offers safer next checks.
3. If it is not there, check whether it is hidden
A missing picture is not always a deleted picture. In Photos, look in Utilities → Hidden and unlock the album if asked. If you find the item, select it and use More → Unhide when you want it visible again.
Apple’s missing-photos guide also covers library views and Apple Account checks. If you use a Shared Photo Library, check Both Libraries rather than only your Personal Library. If pictures disappeared after changing phones, confirm which Apple Account is shown in Settings; do not sign out or change accounts as an experiment.
| What you find | Next step |
|---|---|
| The picture is in Recently Deleted | Recover it and check it in the library. |
| The picture is in Hidden | Unhide it if you want it visible; recovery is not needed. |
| It appears in a different library view | Confirm the view before making changes or deleting anything. |
| It is absent from those places | Preserve existing copies and ask for help before a reset or restore. |
4. Know when to stop and ask for help
After 30 days, or if an item was permanently removed from Recently Deleted, that album cannot bring it back. An independent copy you already saved elsewhere may still help, but do not assume one exists.
Check a computer folder, external drive or message where you knowingly saved or sent a separate copy. Preserve what you find before reorganizing it. For a treasured photo, an emailed version may be useful even if it is not the original quality.
If you are unsure, contact Apple Support with the approximate deletion date, iPhone model, iOS version and whether the picture appears on another device. Do not erase the phone to “try an old backup” before understanding what that restore would replace and whether it actually contains the photo.
Never give an unfamiliar recovery service your Apple Account password or verification code. Recovery promises are not proof that a permanently deleted file can be recovered.
Before you finish: verify the recovered pictures and keep a separate recovery copy of important memories. Our backup basics guide explains the habit. If you want to send a recovered video to family and Gmail rejects its size, use our photo-and-video email guide.
