A backup is a separate, recoverable copy of your files. Sync alone may not protect you from accidental deletion because it can copy that deletion to other devices.
Choose what matters
List documents, photos, business records, and other files you could not easily replace. Check where each application actually stores its data.
Keep separate copies
Use a backup service or a drive with enough capacity for your files and version history. Keep an additional copy separate from your main device and protect at least one copy from a problem that affects your home or office.
Automate and protect
Schedule backups where possible. If your backup is encrypted, keep the recovery information somewhere safe. A backup you cannot unlock will not help you.
Try a restore
Restore a small, unimportant file to a different folder and open it. Confirm that scheduled backups continue to run. Repeat this check after changing devices or backup software.
