Microphone not working in Windows 11? Check these settings first

A meeting where everyone can hear each other except you is frustrating, but it does not automatically mean your microphone is broken. Start by checking whether Windows receives your voice, then test the app you actually want to use.

1. Check the microphone and its mute controls

Confirm the headset or microphone is connected. Check physical mute buttons, an inline cable switch, and the meeting app’s mute control. Position the microphone as its manufacturer recommends.

If you have several microphones, note which one you intend to use. A webcam, laptop, and headset may each offer a separate input. Testing the wrong one can make a working microphone seem faulty.

2. Test the input in Windows

Open Settings → System → Sound. Under Input, select the microphone and use its test controls while speaking normally. Adjust the input volume if necessary. Microsoft’s microphone troubleshooting guide explains this test and the relevant settings.

If Windows receives your voice, move to the meeting app and select that same microphone. A successful Windows test narrows the investigation; it does not guarantee the app is configured correctly.

3. Review microphone permissions

Open Settings → Privacy & security → Microphone. Check microphone access and the permissions relevant to your app. Desktop apps use a separate access control and may not appear as individual switches. Enable only the access you need, following Microsoft’s guidance above.

If you use a meeting website, also check its microphone permission in the browser. Make sure you are changing permission for the intended website, not an unrelated page.

4. Retest the original task

Use the meeting app’s test feature where available, or arrange a short test call. Say a normal sentence and ask whether it sounds clear. Do this before the next important meeting rather than relying only on a moving input meter.

Record whether the problem affects every app or just one. That distinction is useful if you need support. For a managed work PC, ask IT before changing drivers or organization-controlled settings.
