Bluetooth won’t connect in Windows 11? Start with these checks

If a Bluetooth mouse, keyboard, or headset refuses to connect, first check whether Windows can see it at all. A device that never appears needs different attention from one that pairs successfully but does not work as expected. These steps cover Windows 11.

1. Start with power and pairing mode

Charge the accessory or check its batteries, then move it close to the PC. Switch it on and put it into pairing mode using the manufacturer’s instructions. Being powered on does not necessarily make a device discoverable.

Open Settings → Bluetooth & devices and turn Bluetooth on. Choose Add device → Bluetooth, select your accessory, and complete the prompts. For keyboards, follow any displayed code instructions carefully. See Microsoft’s pairing guide for the standard setup process.

2. Decide which problem you have

Write down the result of that attempt. Does the accessory never appear, appear but refuse to pair, or connect without doing what you expect? This small distinction helps you avoid repeating a pairing procedure when the real problem is elsewhere.

Check the model’s connection method, too. Some accessories use a supplied USB receiver instead of Bluetooth, while others offer both. Use the mode described in the device manual.

3. Refresh an existing connection

If Windows lists the accessory but it will not connect, remove that device from Bluetooth settings and pair it again. Before removing your only keyboard or mouse, arrange another way to control the PC, such as a built-in touchpad or wired device.

You can also turn Bluetooth off, wait ten seconds, and turn it back on. This disconnects other Bluetooth accessories temporarily. Save your work before restarting the PC if the problem continues.

4. Use Windows troubleshooting

Run the Bluetooth troubleshooter in Get Help. Microsoft’s connection troubleshooting guide covers these checks and checking Windows Update. If Bluetooth is missing entirely, first confirm that your PC actually supports it.

Before replacing the accessory

Record the PC and accessory models, any pairing error, and whether the accessory works with another compatible device. A successful test elsewhere helps narrow the investigation, although it does not prove every part of the accessory is fault-free.

If the whole computer is slow or unresponsive, address that separately with our Windows performance checks. Stop changing settings once the original task works again, and keep a note of the fix for next time.
