A flickering screen makes even a simple task difficult. Before buying a monitor or changing several settings, note when the problem occurs and whether it affects the whole display. A short, repeatable test gives you a better starting point.
1. Record what changed
Did the flickering begin after an update, when opening a particular app, or after connecting a display? Write down the timing and the equipment involved. If you use two screens, record whether both are affected.
Save open work while the screen is usable. If the flickering makes it uncomfortable to look at, stop the test and ask someone to help. You do not need to watch it continuously to collect useful information.
2. Compare Task Manager with the rest of the screen
Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager. Microsoft says that flickering there as well as elsewhere points toward a display-driver problem. If Task Manager stays steady while the rest flickers, an incompatible app is more likely. These are clues, not proof that the monitor is healthy or faulty.
Microsoft’s screen-flickering guide explains this comparison and the next steps for each result.
3. Try a simple recovery step
Microsoft also suggests Windows key + Ctrl + Shift + B to reset the graphics driver. If that does not help, save your work and restart the PC normally. Repeat the task that originally triggered the problem and note whether anything changed.
4. Follow the relevant branch
For an app-related result, check for an update through Microsoft Store or the app maker’s official website. For a driver-related result, use the driver section of Microsoft’s guide. A rollback may be relevant after a recent update, but it is unavailable when Windows has no previous driver saved.
Avoid trying several unrelated changes in one session. If the display improves, you want to know which action helped. Keep the app name, PC model, and test result together for support.
When to get help
If you cannot read the screen reliably, or the problem continues after these checks, contact the device manufacturer or your workplace IT team before removing drivers. Describe the symptom precisely: flickering, brief blackouts, and distorted colours are different observations.
