Windows 11 update keeps failing? Try these steps first

When Windows Update repeatedly reports a failed installation, start with the exact message rather than a collection of repair commands. This guide is for a Windows 11 PC that still opens normally and lets you reach Settings.

1. Record the failure before changing anything

Open Settings → Windows Update. Note the error code, the update name or KB number if shown, and whether the failure happened during downloading or installation. A screenshot is useful when asking for help.

An installation still showing progress is different from an update that has returned an error. Do not force the power off simply because a percentage pauses. If the PC cannot get back to Windows, these desktop steps are not the right procedure.

2. Check power, connection, and available space

Connect a laptop to power and confirm that the internet connection works. If downloads keep dropping, investigate the connection first with our internet troubleshooting guide.

If Windows reports insufficient storage, review our guide to freeing space safely. Do not delete unfamiliar system folders to make room. Back up important files before moving on to more involved repairs.

3. Run the Windows Update troubleshooter

Open Get Help and run the Windows Update troubleshooter. Alternatively, look under Settings → System → Troubleshoot → Other troubleshooters for Windows Update. Follow the prompts, then save your work and restart as directed.

Return to Settings → Windows Update → Check for updates and try again. This sequence follows Microsoft’s Update Troubleshooter guidance.

4. Use the error code to choose the next step

If the same failure returns, consult Microsoft’s Windows update troubleshooting guide for that problem. Keep a note of what the troubleshooter reported so you do not repeat unsuccessful steps indefinitely.

Avoid combining several unrelated fixes in one attempt. If you change one thing, retry, and record the result, it is easier to see what helped and explain what happened later.

When to involve support

On a work or school PC, ask your IT team about managed update settings. For a home PC, provide the exact error, update identifier, PC model, and the steps already tried. If someone recommends a reset or reinstallation, first confirm the effect on your files and apps and check your backup.

After a successful retry, revisit Windows Update to check for any remaining restart request or failed item. The goal is a completed update, not merely a disappeared notification.
