Is your Windows 11 antivirus working? Run this security checkup

An antivirus icon is easy to overlook until something goes wrong. A short check inside Windows Security can tell you which product is protecting the PC, whether it needs attention, and when a scan last ran.

1. Open the real Windows Security app

Search for Windows Security in Start and open it directly. Choose Virus & threat protection. This avoids relying on a warning displayed by an unfamiliar website.

Check which antivirus provider is active. A non-Microsoft product can take over antivirus protection, so Microsoft Defender being inactive does not necessarily mean the PC is unprotected. Microsoft’s provider and scanning guidance explains this distinction.

2. Review status and updates

Read any action requested by the active product. For Microsoft Defender, check protection updates and current threats. If another provider is active, open that product and review its status there. Avoid installing a second antivirus simply because you are unsure which one is running.

3. Start with an appropriate scan

With Microsoft Defender active, select Quick scan. For additional checks, open Scan options: a full scan checks more broadly, while a custom scan targets selected files or folders. Microsoft’s virus and threat protection guide explains these options.

An offline scan restarts the computer and runs outside the normal Windows session. Save open work before choosing it. Review its results in Protection history afterward.

4. Read the result, not just the progress bar

Check whether the scan finished and whether action remains outstanding. Record a detection name if you need support. Do not restore a quarantined item simply because you recognize its filename or want a download to run.

A clean result is useful evidence, but it is not a guarantee that every account and file is safe. If you shared a password or approved remote access, those actions need separate attention. Our suspicious-link response guide helps distinguish the next steps.

Make the check repeatable

Note the active provider and the date of the completed scan. On a managed work PC, send unresolved warnings to IT rather than changing organization-controlled settings. Keep your backup routine in place alongside antivirus protection.
